Could Be Good, Could Be Bad

I have a long history of experimenting with alcohol. As far back as the 80s, in college, GWIII and I experimented extensely with different types of alcohol, mixers, and other conditions in order to test for various levels, types (happy, sad, surly, etc.), and durations of drunkenness; as well as methods of avoiding and/or mitigating hangovers afterwards. These experiments were carried out under strict laboratory conditions (mostly strip clubs¹), and our results were written up and posted on a BBS we both frequented. In the mid 90s, in cooperation with my Rocky Horror cast, I went through another long bout of extended research and experimentation of combinations of alcohol and other substances (and "sleep deprivation" was added to the side-effects also studied). One of the most memorable results of this era was the fajita margerita (named by Karen, IIRC); a drink born out of pure necessity – the only alcohol left was grain alcohol, and the only thing left to mix it with was salsa.² From the late 90s through the early whatever-the-hell-you-call-this-decade, I perfected my recipe for "Arthur's Punch." For many of you, I need to say no more on this subject.

As my experimentation (and results) have inspired many, so now have I, in turn, been inspired by the experimentation of others. Brendan and Wayland have been experimenting with the infusion of flavors into vodka, and created a separate blog (vodka_infusions) to chronicle their methods and results – the first four varieties created being caramel, cinnamon, coffee, and apple. And just as they have borrowed the recipe for my punch (you have to check out their pictures!) so have I borrowed their idea for infusing flavors into vodka. I, however, have chosen the less-traveled path as far as ingredients are concerned: the two experiments that I have chosen to start with are bacon and garlic

Wish me luck.

¹Right, as if we could afford to get drunk on overpriced strip club drinks back when we were poor college students! One of the motivations for our experimentations was to "get the most bang for our buck."
²I'm not sure if you can technically call it a "drink", since it was thick and chunky salsa, so there was actually a bit of chewing involved in the process. Did I still down it all? What do you think?
³I figure the garlic vodka ought to go well with pizza and pasta. And what wouldn't bacon vodka go with (apart from Ramadan)?

Garlic vodka? Wow, I'm curious about that, and I don't even really drink.

I'll post results when it's done and I taste it.

I was not a big drinker. Stomach never liked it. Beer filled me up to quick. Seemed like there were only 2 real types of drunks. Happy and mean ones. Maybe a few in between. Me a quiet fun one, at least I think so.
At one frat hall party, before they raised the age limit to 21. We were at a table when a bunch came in. I have excellent hearing way above average I heard them say they were going to break up the place as they talked to one another. They brought in all these pipes and were ready for battle. That would be after they drank. Well when they went up for beer and the rest for the john. I went over there and picked up al the pipes on the floor, and threw them in the trash out back. We sat back a laughed as they looked for them all over the floor. There was no incident.

Take Care

I'm almost always the "happy drunk" type, and so are the people who drink my punch. Different drinks have different results.

My stomach (and head) don't always react well to beer (or wine), which is why I stick to liquor.

The garlic would definitely work, since it works in oil infusions.

Bacon? Hmm.

(See my icon.) Bacon-flavored vodka is something that some of my friends have been joking about for years - it had to be one of my first experiments.

And garlic? I just love garlic!

Bacon's taste, to me, is heavily influenced by its texture, which would be hard to put into vodka.

But, you could perhaps use "liquid smoke" to make things interesting.

I loved the pictures! And the signs were awesome. You must be proud.

Garlic Vodka: what the alcohol won't kill the garlic will cure. Sounds like someone is going on a health kick to me.

Anymore.

Thanks for the plug. FYI -- your link to the LJ feed goes to the wrong place.

Good luck on your infusions. I imagine the garlic vodka would work well in a Bloody Mary. We've had several people suggest that we do a bacon vodka; we considered making some and sending it to you as a gag gift, but it looks like you're way ahead of us.

I fixed the link - not sure how I made that mistake. I'll blame LJ. ;)

Never had one, but I can see how that would work.

People have joked with me about bacon vodka for years, which is why it had to be the first experiment.

That is so wrong! (grin) Garlic? Salsa? Bacon? No, no, no...

But experimentation with alcohol is such a noble cause! Go you. (smile)

There's a fine line between genius and insanity.

I crossed it ages ago.

I think bacon- and garlic-infused vodka would be very interesting for mixing a Bloody Mary. To me, a good Bloody Mary is vodka, tomato juice and any kind of spice you can throw in there (pepper, horseradish, hot sauce, etc.). Bacon would add interesting flavors to the mix.

As I said above, I've never had a Bloody Mary (don't really like tomato juice), so I wouldn't be the best one to test that recipe.

I'll bet I could find some volunteers amongst the locals, though.

Dude [info]j_brew said that in Wisconsin, they put pickles in their Bloody Marys. So I dropped dill pickle chips down into my Bloody Mary and it was AWESOME!!! Along with the Tabasco Sauce and black pepper, of course. At the bottom of your glass, is pickles that have the taste of the bloody Mary in them!

Sounds good to me. In New Orleans, they sometimes use pickled okra (I don't like okra at all), and sometimes spicy string beans (which are excellent!). Pickle chips in a Bloody Mary sound very good, and I'll have to try them. Thanks for the tip!

How are you prepping the garlic?

Raw (zingy!)
Poached 30 seconds in boiling water. (smoother in taste, still garlicy)
Roasted (sweeter)
Dry roasted in pan in skin (bewteen poached and roasted in flavor)

I'd probably eleminate fried since that involves other oils.

I was planning to discuss the methods in a subsequent post (saving the third post in the trilogy for the results). I'm afraid that I didn't actually prep the garlic, since the garlic vodka was an afterthought (I had only been planning to start off with bacon vodka) – I saw our huge bottle of minced garlic in the fridge, realized that I still had plenty of vodka left (I thought it appropriate to use the French vodka for the garlic experiment), and just mixed and sealed them together.

The whole thing was done in a hurry, since I've been wanting to do this for a couple of weeks now, but was delayed in getting the materials by the holidays and the immobility of my car. I justified rushing the first experiments into production by promising myself that I would be able to take more time on the next batches. Plus, I was hoping to have something ready to taste test by this weekend, if not Friday night, because I knew I'd have victims volunteers available.

One of the things I'd like to try in the future is what I'd suggested to Brendan: after using coffee beans to infuse vodka, try making coffee from the vodka-soaked beans. (They discarded the beans after filtering their coffee vodka, rather than making vodka coffee to go with it.)

You might want to add just a bit of salt in shot glass to see if it brings out the garlic flavor. Ever tried, sonic peas? Theses are freeze dry peas, coated with Wasabi sauce, Japanese horseradish.
When made right will hit you for a fraction of second between the eyes. Then is gone no taste or after taste. The peas are more like nuts. Crunchy, and bland. No real taste.

Maybe a bit of powder floating on top of shot glass.

Or mixed as sauce in a shot glass to see how it is.

Maybe a light coating of salt around the edge of the shotglass, like they do with margeritas; or a chaser of salt and lemon, like they do with tequila shots? (Who am I kidding by saying "they" anyway?)

Ever tried, sonic peas?

No, but I've seen them for sale in a number of places.

Hmmm… wasabi vodka… Just the thing to go with sushi vodka, or to protect against Count Olaf and the medusoid mycelium.

Cookie_Girl pointed me at this after I mentioned I was making Ginger Infused Vodka (at a friend's request.)

Having made Skittles Vodka and Bubble Gum infused Rum already, I'm workin on new ideas :)

Techinically the fajita margarita was a salsa verde with a dot of sour cream and an olive slice.

It was probably very misnamed, but hey it rhymed.

That was later, when you were playing a game of "I wonder what I can make Arthur drink?" There was also a birthday and M&M shot in there somewhere, too...
