Pastafarianism

Before I left for work yesterday morning, Q told me she'd stolen a couple of bucks from me to buy eggs (since she was out and we were out). She said she was planning to make something I like. (She's been having fun trying out new things¹ recently.) She asked me if I had any guesses when I got home, but I hadn't really thought about it too much – yesterday was a busy day at work, and I just generally don't like playing guessing games. I wouldn't have guessed it anyway.

Ravioli.

I love ravioli, but I've never had homemade ravioli before. This was really good, and also rather different from any ravioli I'd ever had before. First of all, the only flour we had at home was whole wheat flour, so that's what the pasta was made of. (She apologized if that made it taste weird, but I happen to like whole wheat; plus, this way I could convince myself that it was healthy and that I was therefore entitled to a second helping.) She used the bread machine to knead the dough, before rolling it out flat to put in the filling (she was just finishing off the last of them when I arrived; she was making and boiling them about half a dozen at a time). The filling was chicken, garlic, and parmesan cheese (puréed in a blender).

All told, it was yummy, and I have an awesome wife who's already trying to decide what to do differently the next time she tries making some…

¹And speaking of "trying out new things", the spearmint Q planted last year is growing like crazy; I'll have to pick a bunch of leaves and try a vodka infusion with them soon.

Yum! I'm so used to the crap in the can that I can't even imagine what homemade tastes like. Oh I did have ravioli @ a trattitoria(sp?) once and it was deep fried and not covered in sauce, strange and different.

Deep fried, I would have had to force myself to eat less of it.

I've heard that mint leaves can be notoriously variable in their strength of flavor. Make of that what you will.

For this bit of advice, you now owe me (at least) one drink made with the mint vodka. (mintka?) Assuming it won't be ready in time for Shore Leave, we can make other arrangements.

it's not vodka based, but this is an excellent spring and early-summer drink, using Mint. (I like to bring it to croquet games - SJC vs. Naval Academy)

http://www.salon.com/june97/wanderlust/surreal970624.html

PIMM'S NO. 1 CUP
(Serves 6)

Ingredients
1 cucumber, peeled and sliced
1 lime, sliced
1 orange, sliced
1 handful of fresh strawberries, hulled
12 fresh mint sprigs
9 ounces Pimm's No. 1 Cup
24 ounces lemon-flavored soda (7-Up, Sprite, etc.)
12 ounces sparkling mineral water or club soda

1. Place the cucumber, lime, orange, strawberries and half of the mint in the bottom of a glass pitcher. Add the Pimm's and 6 ounces of the lemon-flavored soda. Let stand for 30 minutes.
2. Add the remaining lemon-flavored soda and the mineral water. Stir and serve over ice.
3. Top each glass with cucumber, lime, orange slices and strawberries from the pitcher, and garnish with a mint sprig.

(I often don't mix it completely in advance, and just pour some of the fruit/pimms and then top with a fancy sparkling lemonade. cucumber is oddly essential with this.)

I don't expect to be at Shore Leave this year, so we'll have to work on those other arrangements.

Maybe we can get a pipeline built alongside the ICC.

There's leaves in the freezer for that purpose. Freezing them breaks the fibers and lets the flavor out easier.

Just as long as I don't drink too much and make a pesto of myself...

Damn, that sounds yummy, and like a lot of work.

Tell Q she's welcome to steal a couple of bucks from me anytime she wants to cook some wonderful recipe for me! :)

Oh man I'd love that recipe!

The eel recipe... not so much. We've caught a zillion eels before, but I'm pretty sure they were all salt water.

The problem with people asking either of us for recipes is that we improvise a lot, so we can never tell you exactly how much of everything is in there (and we don't make it the same way the next time). But she can probably give you some general guidelines.

The only problem with the eel? The bones. Other than that, yummy.

I'm always hesitant to cook with whole wheat flour even though I love the flavor because I get scared it will ruin the recipe. If she used pure whole wheat flour (not cut with white flour) then I'd love some "guidelines".
