100 Movies

Ganked from deborahrgoldman:
Below is the Entertainment Weekly's list of 100 Classic Movies of the past 25 years. Bold the ones you've seen, underline the ones you plan to. I also italicized the ones that I love, because that's just how I roll.

I didn't bother with any markups apart from boldface, since I was more than capable of adding comments where necessary. But, just to keep my sweetie happy, I didn't add any graphical effects this time.

  1. Pulp Fiction (1994)
  2. The Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001-03) – In theaters, and extended versions on DVD.
  3. Titanic (1997) – Successfully avoided.
  4. Blue Velvet (1986)
  5. Toy Story (1995) – But I still haven't watched the sequel.
  6. Saving Private Ryan (1998)
  7. Hannah and Her Sisters (1986)
  8. The Silence of the Lambs (1991) – Great movie. The others? Not so much.
  9. Die Hard (1988) – Seen/own 'em all. Yippie-ki-yay, motherfucker.
  10. Moulin Rouge (2001)
  1. This Is Spinal Tap (1984)
  2. The Matrix (1999) – Overrated: it was OK, but not great. The second sucked so hard I never bothered seeing the third.
  3. GoodFellas (1990)
  4. Crumb (1995)
  5. Edward Scissorhands (1990)
  6. Boogie Nights (1997)
  7. Jerry Maguire (1996)
  8. Do the Right Thing (1989)
  9. Casino Royale (2006) – And the original.
  10. The Lion King (1994) – And but one of the sequels.
  11. Schindler's List (1993)
  12. Rushmore (1998)
  13. Memento (2001)
  14. A Room With a View (1986)
  15. Shrek (2001) – And the sequels. The third didn't quite measure up to the first two.
  16. Hoop Dreams (1994)
  17. Aliens (1986) – And the first one, but I have yet to see the third or fourth.
  18. Wings of Desire (1988)
  19. The Bourne Supremacy (2004)
  20. When Harry Met Sally... (1989)
  21. Brokeback Mountain (2005)
  22. Fight Club (1999)
  23. The Breakfast Club (1985)
  24. Fargo (1996)
  25. The Incredibles (2004) – Favorite Pixar so far.
  26. Spider-Man 2 (2004) – Best of the trilogy (I've seen/bought them all).
  27. Pretty Woman (1990)
  28. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
  29. The Sixth Sense (1999) – The twist was already spoiled for me before I saw it.
  30. Speed (1994)
  31. Dazed and Confused (1993)
  32. Clueless (1995) – Just the opposite; I've seen Clue.
  33. Gladiator (2000)
  34. The Player (1992)
  35. Rain Man (1988) – Yeah, definitely.
  36. Children of Men (2006)
  37. Men in Black (1997) – Saw them both, the first one was better.
  38. Scarface (1983)
  39. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)
  40. The Piano (1993)
  41. There Will Be Blood (2007)
  42. The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad (1988) – Saw them all, and the original TV series still holds up.
  43. The Truman Show (1998)
  44. Fatal Attraction (1987)
  45. Risky Business (1983)
  46. 56. The Lives of Others (2006)
  47. There’s Something About Mary (1998)
  48. Ghostbusters (1984) – The second one was OK, but a bit of a letdown. The first is great.
  49. L.A. Confidential (1997)
  50. Scream (1996) – And one of the sequels? Not sure.
  51. Beverly Hills Cop (1984) – Got 'em all. Billy, we have to talk.

  66. The Departed (2006)
  67. Sid and Nancy (1986)

  71. Moonstruck (1987)
  72. Lost in Translation (2003)

  75. The 40 Year-Old Virgin (2005)
  76. Y Tu Mamá También (2002)
  77. Swingers (1996)
  78. Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997) – By the third one, a lot of the re-used jokes were getting old, but they still have some good moments.
  79. Breaking the Waves (1996)

  81. Back to the Future (1985) – All three.

I had to watch Titanic originally as the projectionist, over and over. It was a lot like checking into the Hanoi Hilton. A couple of months ago, I was in a medical office waiting room and the television set was playing it on some cable movie channel, intercut with commercials. It was a lot like having PTSD flashbacks.

It was a lot like checking into the Hanoi Hilton.

Or the Hotel California.

Several years ago, I went on a bus trip to Montréal, Québec. They were planning to play Titanic on the bus for the passengers to watch. When we stopped at a rest area in Vermont, a small group passengers (including GWIII and yours truly) took that tape out of the VCR and hid it. We then selected a tape from amongst the ones we had in our personal luggage to put into the VCR as a replacement. My offerings (including a bootleg copy of the not-yet-released-to-theaters-or-video Orgazmo) were rejected, so we ended up watching someone else's copy of Happy Gilmore.

A friend of mine worked in a video store that was on a long decline into inexorable bankruptcy, so she knew it would be impossible to fire her because she could not be replaced, and she became quite enamored of running the movie El Grande Burrito Y Chica Poquita as a store demo.

No Schindler's List or Saving Private Ryan?

Nope, not yet. I'm not actively avoiding them, but haven't been very motivated to see them yet either,

I don't remember why, but I was actually motivated to go see Saving Private Ryan in the theaters. Schindler's List was a thing we watched in school, and there was a stupid fuss made over it where people had to take home permission slips. I should probably give it another watch where it's not all broken up though.
