From the People Who Did the Animated Portion of the Star Wars Holiday Special

Back in the 80s, there was brief talk of an animated Doctor Who series on Canadian television, to be made by Nelvana Ltd. Below the cut is the concept art by Ted Bastien:

Other Art

I put the Peeps into a post of their own since there were so many pictures of them, and because I knew they would be of interest to all of the Peeps fans I know. (I personally have never seen the appeal of Peeps.) However, I did take pictures of a few other things; and since Q went back there today with Dawn to meet up with Skanky, I will most likely have even more pictures later. (There will also be a few more involving Richard which will be, as per usual, friends-only.) Anyway, they're below the cut. )

Bacon: the Other White Heat

I ganked this from larryv, and it's unbelievably cool:

You know bacon is delicious, but did you know it contains enough energy to melt metal?

Pure oxygen flows from a metal pipe through a core of baked prosciutto, generating a grease fire hot enough to ignite steel and burn a hole clear through this pan. A wrapping of less-flammable uncooked prosciutto focuses the flame into an intense bacon-plasma torch. …Pure oxygen helps release it in a much shorter time than usual, but it's really the chemical energy in the bacon that makes the steel pan burn.

larryv described the phenomenon with this equation:

bacon + pure oxygen = light saber

If you read the article, you'll find that they also made a vegetarian heat lance with a hollowed-out cucumber stuffed with breadsticks (though not quite as long-lasting, still produces a very impressive flame).

April Fool's Joke Backfires on ThinkGeek

Big surprise. ThinkGeek's April Fool's jokes are always the cruelest, because they tend to feature things that a lot of people would love to see in reality. (I know more than one person who was disappointed to discover that Squeez Bacon® didn't actually exist, for instance.)

For Those It May Interest

Probably caused by the fact that she's just watched four seasons of Doctor Who in a couple of weeks, and is working on plans for the next Rocky Horror convention, my wife Q has recently had a dream combining the two… Which she's turning into a short story.

Trilogy Meter

Some guy named Dan Meth (I can't get that link to open, but that might just be the firewall here at work) made the above chart (click for larger size) defining (IHO) the quality of various movie trilogies, comparing the movies within a trilogy to each other and also allowing for the comparison of trilogies with other trilogies. A good idea, and it looks good visually, but I have an issue or two with it. I'm not going to get into his specific ratings (obviously, those are a reflection of personal taste, and I'm not in full agreement with all of his opinions), but here's what I'd like to see addressed.

First of all is the obvious fact that these aren't all trilogies. There are a heck of lot more than three Star Trek movies, for instance, and we all know how a chart of that series would look: mostly even-good, odd-bad. This would look interesting placed next to a chart of the Nightmare on Elm Street series, which follows the opposite pattern. There are also two Star Wars trilogies (although only one of them actually counts); technically, he should have labelled those 4, 5, and 6 rather than 1, 2, and 3. There were four Christopher Reeve Superman films (and you could have some fun trying to squeeze Superman Returns in there as well; would it go at the end, or between 2 and 3?), as well as four Alien, Indiana Jones, and Die Hard movies. I'm not sure how many Rocky and Planet of Apes movies we ended up with… And if you're going to include both Michael Keaton and Val Kilmer Batman movies on your chart, why not also include the Batman movies with Adam West, George Clooney, and Christian Bale? Seems kind of arbitrary there, methinks. Anyway, if you're going to call your chart "The Trilogy Meter", then you really ought to stick to actual trilogies.

Second, as the Elm Street reference above makes clear, there are several series that aren't represented. If I were making my own version of this chart (and don't think that I won't!) I'd have to drop some of the existing trilogies/series that I haven't seen (in part or at all) and add a few others. Poltergeist, The Omen, Evil Dead/Army of Darkness, Austin Powers – these are at least as well known as some of the series on the chart, and all of them are actual trilogies. And if I were to graph other series of movies, I'd definitely have to do one for the Highlander movies – just to show the second movie with a red bar in the negatives.

So what do you think – should I make my own addendum to this chart or possibly a completely new one, based on either my opinions or a polls of my friends list?

[Another] Star Wars Musical

Los Angeles (E! Online) – A long time from now, in a galaxy far, far away … the Star Wars money machine will still be cranking. Not content with seven feature films or myriad TV spinoffs ranging from the current Clone Wars cartoon series to the dreaded Star Wars Holiday Special, the Jedi masterminds are readying a stage show. George Lucas has signed off on Star Wars: A Musical Journey…

So far, everyone from Mad Magazine (decades ago!) to Robot Chicken ("The Empire on Ice") has already done a Star Wars musical. (See my attempt in the comments.) The last thing we need is another one that actually tries to take itself seriously, and charges a gazillion dollars for a decent seat.
…a two-hour live musical event featuring a Stormtrooper kick line
OK, now I know we've already seen this, on stage with William Shatner.
and singing Wookiees John Williams' Oscar-winning score.
Singing Wookiees That'll sound even worse than, well, me singing!
Premiering next year in London's O2 arena, the production will be performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in synch with movie clips from the six live-action films. The show will play in chronological order, from The Phantom Menace to Return of the Jedi.
Not that I cared anyway, but the inclusion of episodes one through three guarantee my total lack of interest.
The production will blast off April 10 in the U.K. and then embark on a European tour, complete with an exhibition of rare Star Wars collectibles, including never-before-seen models, props, costumes and production artwork. No word when it will visit America.

Star Trek vs. Star Wars -- Oi, Merana!

This isn't the one I've seen dozens of times before, but a new one. Funny, and a fairly good editing job (although the uniforms on the Enterprise crew keep changing). Watch for the last bit after the credits.
