Snark

He Really Is An Excellent Driver, Though. Yeah. Yeah.

There's that famous, but likely apocryphal, story about Laurence Olivier and Dustin Hoffman when they were working together on Marathon Man. To prepare for a scene, Hoffman had gone for a few days without sleep and looked pretty rough. Olivier asked him why he was putting himself through such an ordeal and Hoffman replied that he was trying to be convincing in the role. Olivier replied, "Try acting dear boy".  – Snopes.Com

While we were driving to New England last week, one of the CDs Q popped in was Band on the Run by Paul McCartney and Wings. When the song "Picasso's Last Words (Drink to Me)" came on, she told me the story (again) about how it was written. Paul was having dinner with Dustin Hoffman, who told the story of the death of Pablo Picasso and his famous last words, "Drink to me, drink to my health. You know I can't drink anymore." Paul had a guitar with him and immediately played an impromptu chord progression while singing the quote. He wrote the song on the spot, to Hoffman's glee. Q concluded by saying that "Dustin Hoffman started dancing around and acting like an ass."

"Dustin Hoffman does not act like an ass," I rebuked her with mock-seriousness. "Dustin Hoffman becomes an ass."

FWOOSH!

The Usual

Back from vacation and we all feel crappy. Looks like Richard got it first, passed it on to me and Q; but Q got the mildest case. So she gets to go out and get us an emergency caffeine resupply, while Richard and I play a game of "No, your face feels hot" (once he gets out of the bathroom again). Seriously, laugh a minute here, who wants to visit the contagion house and join us?
