God, I’m Bored

A perusal of IMDb’s Most Popular Feature Films Released 1960 to 1969 and 100 Greatest Films of 1960s shows that many of the top movies from that decade were adaptations (or re-adaptations) of books and/or Broadway musicals. There were also sequels, like the James Bond films Goldfinger and You Only Live Twice (the first Bond film was Dr. No) or The Pink Panther (the first Inspector Clouseau film was A Shot in the Dark). Elizabeth Taylor starred in Cleopatra in 1963; according to Wikipedia that was the fifth version of Cleopatra filmed (the first was in 1899!) They were also making movies based on the Bible for decades before the 1960s, so you could call movies like King of Kings (1963) either remakes or reboots. The same goes for Shakespeare adaptations; Romeo and Juliet (1968) was at least the third movie made with that title (the first was in 1936). And that’s just me scanning the lists and looking for titles that I recognize. There are probably plenty of others that are remakes, adaptations, or sequels but I just haven’t heard of them.

When I was in high school, a set of Chinese twins entered my grade in the middle of the year. They were a boy and a girl, named Ving and Ling Shangguan.

Both of them were in my trigonometry class. Ving sat right next to me, and turned out to be pretty cool. He told me that I could cheat off of his test if I would do one thing for him. Since I was failing trig and would sell my soul for the answers, I said, "Sure, anything."

He asked me how to legally change his name. He was sick of the name "Ving"; and when I asked him what he wanted his new name to be, he said "Lee. Like in Bruce Lee." Can't say I blamed him.

Ling overheard us. She said that his name had been passed down for generations and that their parents would disown him if he changed it. He didn't care. I offered to drive Ving to the town hall after school. Ling insisted on tagging along, so I brought them both.

As soon as we got there, Ving went straight to the desk, demanded a form, and pulled out his birth certificate. He started scribbling information into the paperwork; but about halfway through he stopped, looking conflicted. Tears started welling in his eyes. Apparently, that ancestral stuff runs deep.

He told the receptionist that he'd changed his mind, and just couldn't do it. She told him that he would have to pay a fee to cancel his request. Ling was so glad that he changed his mind that she grabbed some cash out of her purse. She was just about to hand it to the receptionist when a man burst into the town hall.

He was a short, elderly Asian man; wearing neon shorts, an American flag t-shirt, and Ray-bans. Apparently, someone had gone native. "Dad?" Ving said, staring at the man, tears running down his cheeks.

The father ran up and embraced his son and daughter, a huge smile on his face. "Don't stop, be Lee, Ving. Hold on to that fee, Ling."

So, This Exists

A collection of comics following the movie. Pretty “meh,” as they don’t live up to the quality of the movie, recycle some of the jokes and dialog from the movie, and are otherwise pretty predictable. The story takes place between the crash landing at the convention (after which the government seized all of the alien tech and explained it away as a promotional stunt) and the airing of the pilot for the launch of the new Galaxy Quest TV series. Besides the drama happening between the characters (which actually seemed to have been resolved by the end of the movie; but here, the characters have reverted to the way they were before meeting the Thermians), there was also a short plot about another alien ship attacking the Earth, and the government grabbing the Galaxy Quest actors to take the ship up to meet them (the government has been trying to study it at Area 51, but it will only work for the original crew). I had hoped for more; but then, if it had been better, I’d have heard of it and obtained it sooner.

Bill Watterson Returns to Cartooning

After making the strip above, Stephan Pastis managed to contact “Calvin and Hobbes” cartoonist Bill Watterson and actually got him to collaborate on three strips… Ever wished that “Calvin and Hobbes” creator Bill Watterson would return to the comics page? Well, he just did.

And here they are.Collapse )

I thought the art was Watterson-esque when I originally saw the strips running, but I thought it was an homage – not that Watterson had actually done it!

Twitter User Jailed For Using “Allah” in His Handle

A Turkish Twitter user was sentenced to 15 months in prison on Thursday — for using a handle that was deemed religiously offensive. The user, Allah (c.c.), or @CenabiAllah, was charged with “humiliating the religious values accepted by a part of the people,” according to Turkish news website Hurriyet Daily News.
